Final Images/Project Evaluation

MUA Day Time Look:

This look consists of soft neutral tones for the makeup to enhance the wearer's natural beauty, and a loose side fishtail plait. The makeup was created designed to enhance the natural shaping of the model's features and to add a softness and femininity. The hair was swept over to the side and styled into a fishtail plait to create a soft textured detail to the image. The foundation of my inspiration was the Valentines Inspiration Pinterest board that MUA posted, which displayed soft, feminine makeup and romantic braided hairstyles.

Whilst creating this look, it was important to perfectly match the foundation to the skin tone for a very natural look and to create the correct balance of contouring to look flattering in the photographs. After the testing process and test images, I decided to create a fishtail plait rather than a regular three stranded plait because the finish looked better looser and messier. This was then created in my final image which really complimented the relaxed concept I was after.

This look would have suited any model, yet I believed that a model with a warm skin tone and natural hair colour would be ideal. The hair also looks more flattering on a model with hair this length to produce a looser fishtail plait. To create the correct atmosphere for this look, I asked the model to be relaxed in her posing so she looks comfortable and at ease. The grey colour of the background isn't harsh and compliments the shoot's notion.

I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this shoot, and I believe it represents MUA as a brand. The shoot displays a femininity yet still looks youthful and natural, which is what is often portrayed in MUA's images on their social media sites and website.

MUA Evening Look:

For the Evening look, I created a bold deep berry lip and paired it with a smokey eye and gold glitter. The hair is on trend with the sharp slicked back, wet look hair. The simplicity of the hair compliments the bold makeup to create an ideal evening look to represent MUA. This makeup look has been inspired by a combination of trends from the catwalk that MUA has featured on their blog, which also show the models wearing their hair in similar styles. This look has also been inspired by Balmain collections which show evening glamour in similar colours.

When choosing the model, I considered how a heavy makeup would sit on different skin tones and whether the colour of hair would compliment it. I chose a model with a Greek background who has dark features and an olive skin tone. Her skin tone and texture pulled off a strongly contoured look and heavy eye and lip makeup. Her hair was in a good condition which helped to create a natural shine under the studio lighting.

The images show the model with a confident posture as I wanted to create the idea of the makeup generating a high self esteem and female power. The lighting works beautifully with her skin tone, but I would possibly have preferred some lighting on the background to create a better contrast with the hair so that the structure could be more visible. I attempted changing the background to various other colours, yet the black background was the most suitable for this shoot.

This look was created with two particular MUA products in mind; Matte Lipstick in Wild Berry and the 12 Shade Heaven and Earth Eyeshadow Palette. Therefore I believe is represents the brand well. Also, as previously shown in my design development, the MUA makeup artist sports a very similar look to this one.

MUA Spring/Summer Look:

For this MUA Spring/Summer look, I created my look based on the pastel eye trends as seen on the catwalk and transfer it into the perfect look for this brand. As seen in my design development, MUA created a Spring collection and Look Book which shows the model sporting a fresh, rosy cheeked makeup. With this skin finish, I created a soft purple eye using one of MUA's eyeshadows, which was blended into a pale shimmer using another MUA eyeshadow from the Undress Me Too Palette. These colours were inspired by some of the materials in Monique Lhuillier's SS15 collection. This look was paired with a braided crown hairstyle, infused with white blossoms. The blossoms are symbolic of Spring; white being pure, and blossom being perfectly seasonal. The hair has been kept wispy for an effortless and innocent look.

For this look, I chose a model with fair hair and skin as it shows up the pink tones beautifully on the cheeks and compliments the purple shades on the eyes. The blonde hair, which is coloured naturally, contrasts the rich purple background and is flattering with the white blossom. I asked the model to create a softness in her eyes for a serene final outcome. The studio lighting beautifully reflects the highlight on the skin and looks almost like natural lighting. If I could change anything about this final image, I would have liked to have used a paler background, but I think the purple really brings out the colour on the eyes.

I believe that this look would be very suitable for MUA, and can imagine it being a part of their Spring Collection on their website. The look is youthful and fresh, which suits the customer profile well, and I am very pleased with the final outcome and the story the look creates.

MUA High Summer/Beach Look:

This look for High Summer/Beach, I based my idea around some of MUA's most recent inspiration with the use of bright primary colours. The choice of colour and positioning of the eye makeup has been inspired by Lela Rose Spring 2013 as it reminds be of the artwork as seen on MUA's Pinterest. The colours of the eyes and lips are vibrant and the skin tone is warm and glossy to create the effect of a Summery sun-kissed skin. To compliment this look, I created a high shine, wet-look plait with a gold accessory and paired it with a bright coral nail colour.

When creating this makeup look, I wanted to make sure the skin had a beautiful dewy glow. The skin products I use do not create this skin texture naturally, so I had to improvise with different cosmetics such as liquid highlighter, moisturiser, oil, water spray and high shimmer eyeshadows. The final images show the extreme highlighting of the skin under the studio lighting, which I am extremely satisfied with. The finish of the hair could potentially be cleaner, but the hair separation creates the illusion of wetter hair, rather than a dry yet sleek look.

The model for this look has a very defined bone structure which works wonderfully with the hair being scraped back. Her features stand out well under the lighting and carry the dewy makeup very well. I also asked my model to apply tan in advance to create a natural warm glow to her skin, which I then perfected with foundation to match the texture of the skin on her face. The colour of the background compliments the yellow eye makeup and is fitting with the colour of the lips and nails.

This look really suits MUA as they state on their website that they are "inspired by playing with colour". I feel that I have portrayed this statement well within this look, yet have kept the young and energetic idea of the customer profile.

MUA Nails Look:

Inspired by the colours of catwalk trends and the nail art posted on MUA's website and blog, I chose to use turquoise, gold and peach/pink and my base colours. MUA posted on their blog a nail art design based on the fabric patterns from Holly Fulton SS15 collection, which also showed a primary colour of turquoise. Whilst creating the makeup and hair designs for this look, it was important to ensure that the nails were the key point of focus of the shoot, with the makeup and hair to compliment rather than over power. The hair is back off the face and structured into unique little buns, which look fun and edgy. The makeup has been kept fresh and young with splashes of glitter and pink/peach for a complimentary look for the nails. I was extremely lucky enough to find the perfect nail design for this look, with the colours fitting magnificently with my design development.

For this look, I was initially looking to scout a model with a different ethnicity to show diversity, yet the model I ended up choosing really suited the colour these of this look. The lighting was kept bright and on a white background to suit the small white detail on the nail designs. I asked the model to pose in different positions using her hands cleverly to ensure they were the main focus. The aim was to create a playful final image, and the model did this perfectly when instructed.

Based on the fact that the nail design is very similar to previous designs posted by MUA, I feel that this look represents MUA successfully and shows off the nails as the main focus. The colours on the nails are all available from MUA and the hair and makeup designs fit well within the brand also.

In all of the above images, I chose to shoot my looks in the studio with studio lighting. This is because MUA have produced their looks within a studio, and I wanted to replicate a similar outcome. I also styled all the models without clothing over their shoulder to be certain that the hair and makeup was not distracted from and kept the main focus of the image.

Karla Powell at MUA!

So this week, one of my favourite make-up artists has announced that she will be rejoining the MUA team! Karla Powell, the lip art guru of the UK will be teaming up with MUA for some exciting future creativity, and I cannot wait to see what is in store!

Makeup Academy Blog, (2015). Makeup Academy Blog - Page 2 of 39 [online] Available at: http://blog.mua-cosmetics.com/page/2/ [Accessed 28 Apr. 2015].

For those of you who don't yet know Karla Powell, she is "an Award Winning International, Fashion, Portrait, Beauty Make-up Artist. Working in London, Europe and the USA" and first came to my attention through Facebook, Instagram, and of course her success at the Illamasqua awards in 2013.

Bio-Clients-Publications. (2015). [online] Available at: http://www.karlapowell.co.uk/bio [Accessed 31 Mar. 2015].

I began following lots of makeup artists on Instagram in admiration of their work and to provide creative inspiration. I started following Karla a couple of years ago when she had possibly a couple of thousand followers. As you can see now her followers have reached an impressive volume to over 81 thousand people!

On her personal website Karla states her return to MUA Cosmetics:

“So, last week it was announced that I would be returning to MUA Cosmetics as part of the Make Up Team, this will involve creating YouTube tutorials, make up looks, blogs, news about new products and hopefully some product development and being involved with campaigns!

I know my return may come as a shock to some people, but I feel now is the right time to work with a brand that I hold so close to my heart. MUA gave me a chance to come to London as young girl and be the Head of Make Up Artistry. I absolutely loved my job and time at MUA and I was sad to leave.

I always had big dreams of launching my own products one day, but this isn’t always possible when you are employed, as there can be conflicts of interest. Now a business owner I understand this! During the end of my tenure at MUA I really wanted to start bringing out my own products and this wasn’t possible for a number of reasons.
I felt it best that we partied company and although it did not end on the best terms my love for the company and people there, always remained.

“If you carry the bricks from your past relationship, you will end up building the same house’’

I am a different person now; I have my own business and my own product line! I love teaching, workshops, working on campaigns and of course the biggest life changer of all I am now a Mommy!

The world is a different place, I am not the same 22 year old girl that up and left my roots, my family and friends and went to London on my own. People change, the world changes, businesses change and personnel changes.

I am so excited to be working with MUA again! Another chapter starts again and one I am delighted to be writing.  Here are some looks from their new Lip Luxe Range.

The MUA Nails woman is not afraid to stand out from the crowd and is the trendsetter amongst her friends.

MUA Nail Look Development

MUA not only produce makeup and makeup brushes, they also have a large selection on nail products. Their Pinterest keeps their customers up to date on the latest nail trends on the catwalk. Below shows an image of their Pinterest posts of different nail designs that have inspired their products. Flicking through their Pinterest I have noticed a regular occurrence of pastels a glitters/gold which I think is the perfect answer to switching up your every day manicure.

On MUA's Facebook page they showed beautiful Spring nail collection displays which follow the pastel trend perfectly. This is just a little taster of their nail range and from testing on the previous post, the quality for price is unbelievable!

Looking at the latest nail trends, I have really loved the subtle nail designs that compliment the makeup and hair. At Cushine Et Ochs SS15 show the models wore a bold winged eyeliner, nude lips, dewy skin and scraped back hair. The nails were a delightful pale pink to compliment the colour of the lips, and a subtle gold half moon shape. The nails are understated but create a perfect polished off look. The gold really makes the nail design!

At Nanette Lepore SS15 show, the models sported a very innocent look with white lined eyes and flirtatious false eyelashes. The pale mint nails are a lovely touch to the Spring show and compliment the pale colours and fresh complexions of the models.

The nails at Rebecca Minkoff SS15 were inspired directly by the pattern on the fabric. The image to the right creates a clear comparison. I really like how unique this nail design is and how it coincides with the collection. Again, use of pastel, predominantly turquoise which has been largely seen lately.

Charlotte Ronson Spring 2015 show showed the mint cut out manicure. This look is a fantastically subtle enhancement of a classic manicure. A similar look was pinned on MUA's Nails Pinterest board and is very fitting for a Spring look. Again, the pleasant mint/turquoise colour showcased on the runway.

MUA recently posted a very similar look on their Facebook page where a customer has posted their results using an MUA nail product.

At Zimmermann Spring 2015 the nails showed a subtle gold glitter infusion on the nails. This worked beautifully with the model's soft makeup and gold sequin embellishment on each eye. The skin here is glowing with a soft peach tinted cheek and natural lip. The rest of the makeup is kept very clean and subtle which works beautifully with the peaches and golds in the collection.

MUA recently blogged a nail design inspired by Holly Fulton SS15 collection which showed bold white, turquoise and black patterns. The nail art was created using Pistachio Ice Cream, Leapfrog, White Wash and Pitch Black. The refreshing colours were seen throughout the collection, as have these colours been in latest nail trends.

Going back to the Zimmermann Spring 2015 collection, we can see dramatic textures and floaty materials in golds and peaches. These colours will be included in the makeup design with a complimentary turquoise, which also made an appearance in the collection and also inspired by the above nail art looks.

Make-Up Mood Board:

My mood board shows pinks, peaches, golds and turquoises. These colours have been inspired from the catwalk trends as discussed above.

Make-Up Testing:

For this look, I feel it would look fitting to have a strong and clean brow to create something different from the previous looks. Also in the images from my mood board there appears to be this shape eyebrow common in the majority of the looks. This was created using a blonde eyebrow pencil to create the shape and definition, eyebrow powder to create a softer colour on the eyebrow hairs and inner part of the bows, then concealer to neaten up and messy edges.

This skin is contoured and highlighted with a slight dewy texture. Highlighter has been added to the cheekbones, nose and cupid's bow. The lips have been softly lined with a natural colour to create a slight definition to the lips.

This makeup has been inspired by the look at Cushine Et Ochs  with the thick black winged eyeliner. The look sported by Cara Delevingne in my mood board shows winged eyeliner paired with a hot pink lip which I think has a 'sport luxe' look about it. I really enjoy this makeup, but I feel it is missing something.

Similar to the look above, I added gold to the top of the black winged eyeliner. I have paired this with the same pink lip and kept the makeup very sharp also on the eyes and brows. The gold adds an interesting dimension to the look which I really enjoy, and keeps the look on trend.

To create this look, I patted a gold cream over the entire eyelid and under the eyes to create a glossy shine of gold, which pairs nicely with the bronzed, dewy skin. The lips show a contrast of pink and gold detail. This has been a combined inspiration from Prada SS 2008 with the gold cupid's bow, and Van Noten Spring 2015 with the line on the lower lip. Combined they create an unusual effective lip design.

This look has been a continuation of the above look, this time adding gold glitter to the eyes. The glitter was showcased recently at Anna Sui where the models wore gold glitter on their eyes in four separate positions. The glitter nail art has inspired this look as I wish to add gold glitter to the nails, so this makeup will tie this idea in perfectly.

For my final design I will change the makeup on the lips to something more subtle to not draw the attention away from the main focus, the nails. In order to do this, I will tone the lip shade down to a more subtle peach based pink and team them with gold glitter eyes.

Face Chart:

The makeup look to represent MUA nail products will be complimentary of the choice of nail colours. For the nails, I will be using turquoise and gold. As displayed at Zimmermann, peach/pink, gold and turquoise compliment each other beautifully. To keep with this theme, I shall be creating a glittery gold eye paired with a peachy pink lip. The skin with have a flawless glow to it and the eyebrows will be defined.

Hair Mood Board:

To create a clear focus on the nails, I would like to create a slick and clean hairstyle that is off the face. Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein shows both demonstrated interesting bun hairstyles. Marc Jacobs models sported a mohawk bun hair style, whilst Calvin Klein showed an individual bun with extreme slick hair. Over the recent years there has been a craze over 90s style and when it comes to hair, Gwen Stefani was the girl who perfected the 90s buns. Her makeup also often was glittery and colourful and her style was fun and playful. This is what I would like to portray in this MUA look!

Hair Testing:

This look has been inspired by Gwen Stefani as shown in my mood board above. This look consists of two separate sections of hair which has been twisted into two buns. The sections have been scraped back to create a tight ponytail and the hair sprayed with hairspray to clean up any stray hairs. The hair has been left slightly untwisted in the bun to create a tuft of hair at the base of the bun. This hairstyle would look great with the above makeup as it is fun and unusual.

This look is a mohican made out of individual ponytails. The ponytails connect as the hair goes down at the back of the head. This style is an unusual twist of the classic mohawk, but to keep with the style I am after I think it would look better tied up or in buns.

This hairstyle has been created using the same technique in the previous mohawk with the sections down the back of the head. Similar to the bottom left image in my mood board, the hair has been knotted. This effect has been created using the slipknot technique where the hair gets woven and knotted into each other with the remaining hair tucked under and gripped into place.

This look has been directly inspired by the hairstyle at Marc Jacobs. The mohican using buns created a fun, edgy look which will suit the makeup and nails. This look had been finished off with hairspray and shine spray for that extra slick look. The issue I have with this look is that in the final photos, the face on images will only show the first bun. To solve this problem, I am going to create a look where the buns are distributed around the head.

Hair Chart:

The final hair look will consist of four buns spread out across the head, one on top, one at each side and one at the bottom. This way the buns can be seen from all angles. This will be created by separating the hair into four clean sections using mousse and tightly coming the hair into ponytails. Each section will then be sprayed with hairspray and shine spray for a slick finish. Once the sections have been perfected, the ponytails will be tightly twisted and wrapped around to create little buns and secured with clear bands.

Nail Mood Board:

The colour theme of the nails will be turquoise and gold and have an interesting design on them. For convenience of shooting the photographs quickly, the nails will be prepared of bought in advance then applied on the day.

I was extremely lucky to stumble across the PERFECT fake nails in a shop whilst out shopping for plain nails to paint on. They are turquoise, white and gold which is exactly what I was after. The design is funky and will look perfect with the hair and makeup.
