MUA Nail Look Development

MUA not only produce makeup and makeup brushes, they also have a large selection on nail products. Their Pinterest keeps their customers up to date on the latest nail trends on the catwalk. Below shows an image of their Pinterest posts of different nail designs that have inspired their products. Flicking through their Pinterest I have noticed a regular occurrence of pastels a glitters/gold which I think is the perfect answer to switching up your every day manicure.

On MUA's Facebook page they showed beautiful Spring nail collection displays which follow the pastel trend perfectly. This is just a little taster of their nail range and from testing on the previous post, the quality for price is unbelievable!

Looking at the latest nail trends, I have really loved the subtle nail designs that compliment the makeup and hair. At Cushine Et Ochs SS15 show the models wore a bold winged eyeliner, nude lips, dewy skin and scraped back hair. The nails were a delightful pale pink to compliment the colour of the lips, and a subtle gold half moon shape. The nails are understated but create a perfect polished off look. The gold really makes the nail design!

At Nanette Lepore SS15 show, the models sported a very innocent look with white lined eyes and flirtatious false eyelashes. The pale mint nails are a lovely touch to the Spring show and compliment the pale colours and fresh complexions of the models.

The nails at Rebecca Minkoff SS15 were inspired directly by the pattern on the fabric. The image to the right creates a clear comparison. I really like how unique this nail design is and how it coincides with the collection. Again, use of pastel, predominantly turquoise which has been largely seen lately.

Charlotte Ronson Spring 2015 show showed the mint cut out manicure. This look is a fantastically subtle enhancement of a classic manicure. A similar look was pinned on MUA's Nails Pinterest board and is very fitting for a Spring look. Again, the pleasant mint/turquoise colour showcased on the runway.

MUA recently posted a very similar look on their Facebook page where a customer has posted their results using an MUA nail product.

At Zimmermann Spring 2015 the nails showed a subtle gold glitter infusion on the nails. This worked beautifully with the model's soft makeup and gold sequin embellishment on each eye. The skin here is glowing with a soft peach tinted cheek and natural lip. The rest of the makeup is kept very clean and subtle which works beautifully with the peaches and golds in the collection.

MUA recently blogged a nail design inspired by Holly Fulton SS15 collection which showed bold white, turquoise and black patterns. The nail art was created using Pistachio Ice Cream, Leapfrog, White Wash and Pitch Black. The refreshing colours were seen throughout the collection, as have these colours been in latest nail trends.

Going back to the Zimmermann Spring 2015 collection, we can see dramatic textures and floaty materials in golds and peaches. These colours will be included in the makeup design with a complimentary turquoise, which also made an appearance in the collection and also inspired by the above nail art looks.

Make-Up Mood Board:

My mood board shows pinks, peaches, golds and turquoises. These colours have been inspired from the catwalk trends as discussed above.

Make-Up Testing:

For this look, I feel it would look fitting to have a strong and clean brow to create something different from the previous looks. Also in the images from my mood board there appears to be this shape eyebrow common in the majority of the looks. This was created using a blonde eyebrow pencil to create the shape and definition, eyebrow powder to create a softer colour on the eyebrow hairs and inner part of the bows, then concealer to neaten up and messy edges.

This skin is contoured and highlighted with a slight dewy texture. Highlighter has been added to the cheekbones, nose and cupid's bow. The lips have been softly lined with a natural colour to create a slight definition to the lips.

This makeup has been inspired by the look at Cushine Et Ochs  with the thick black winged eyeliner. The look sported by Cara Delevingne in my mood board shows winged eyeliner paired with a hot pink lip which I think has a 'sport luxe' look about it. I really enjoy this makeup, but I feel it is missing something.

Similar to the look above, I added gold to the top of the black winged eyeliner. I have paired this with the same pink lip and kept the makeup very sharp also on the eyes and brows. The gold adds an interesting dimension to the look which I really enjoy, and keeps the look on trend.

To create this look, I patted a gold cream over the entire eyelid and under the eyes to create a glossy shine of gold, which pairs nicely with the bronzed, dewy skin. The lips show a contrast of pink and gold detail. This has been a combined inspiration from Prada SS 2008 with the gold cupid's bow, and Van Noten Spring 2015 with the line on the lower lip. Combined they create an unusual effective lip design.

This look has been a continuation of the above look, this time adding gold glitter to the eyes. The glitter was showcased recently at Anna Sui where the models wore gold glitter on their eyes in four separate positions. The glitter nail art has inspired this look as I wish to add gold glitter to the nails, so this makeup will tie this idea in perfectly.

For my final design I will change the makeup on the lips to something more subtle to not draw the attention away from the main focus, the nails. In order to do this, I will tone the lip shade down to a more subtle peach based pink and team them with gold glitter eyes.

Face Chart:

The makeup look to represent MUA nail products will be complimentary of the choice of nail colours. For the nails, I will be using turquoise and gold. As displayed at Zimmermann, peach/pink, gold and turquoise compliment each other beautifully. To keep with this theme, I shall be creating a glittery gold eye paired with a peachy pink lip. The skin with have a flawless glow to it and the eyebrows will be defined.

Hair Mood Board:

To create a clear focus on the nails, I would like to create a slick and clean hairstyle that is off the face. Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein shows both demonstrated interesting bun hairstyles. Marc Jacobs models sported a mohawk bun hair style, whilst Calvin Klein showed an individual bun with extreme slick hair. Over the recent years there has been a craze over 90s style and when it comes to hair, Gwen Stefani was the girl who perfected the 90s buns. Her makeup also often was glittery and colourful and her style was fun and playful. This is what I would like to portray in this MUA look!

Hair Testing:

This look has been inspired by Gwen Stefani as shown in my mood board above. This look consists of two separate sections of hair which has been twisted into two buns. The sections have been scraped back to create a tight ponytail and the hair sprayed with hairspray to clean up any stray hairs. The hair has been left slightly untwisted in the bun to create a tuft of hair at the base of the bun. This hairstyle would look great with the above makeup as it is fun and unusual.

This look is a mohican made out of individual ponytails. The ponytails connect as the hair goes down at the back of the head. This style is an unusual twist of the classic mohawk, but to keep with the style I am after I think it would look better tied up or in buns.

This hairstyle has been created using the same technique in the previous mohawk with the sections down the back of the head. Similar to the bottom left image in my mood board, the hair has been knotted. This effect has been created using the slipknot technique where the hair gets woven and knotted into each other with the remaining hair tucked under and gripped into place.

This look has been directly inspired by the hairstyle at Marc Jacobs. The mohican using buns created a fun, edgy look which will suit the makeup and nails. This look had been finished off with hairspray and shine spray for that extra slick look. The issue I have with this look is that in the final photos, the face on images will only show the first bun. To solve this problem, I am going to create a look where the buns are distributed around the head.

Hair Chart:

The final hair look will consist of four buns spread out across the head, one on top, one at each side and one at the bottom. This way the buns can be seen from all angles. This will be created by separating the hair into four clean sections using mousse and tightly coming the hair into ponytails. Each section will then be sprayed with hairspray and shine spray for a slick finish. Once the sections have been perfected, the ponytails will be tightly twisted and wrapped around to create little buns and secured with clear bands.

Nail Mood Board:

The colour theme of the nails will be turquoise and gold and have an interesting design on them. For convenience of shooting the photographs quickly, the nails will be prepared of bought in advance then applied on the day.

I was extremely lucky to stumble across the PERFECT fake nails in a shop whilst out shopping for plain nails to paint on. They are turquoise, white and gold which is exactly what I was after. The design is funky and will look perfect with the hair and makeup.
